Castles and Fortresses in Alta Pusteria

Symbols of a past when it was necessary to defend the territory from foreign intruders. Alta Pusteria offers some of the most beautiful artistic castles. Some are perfectly preserved, while others have been restored and reflect the life of times gone by. The castles in Alta Pusteria are an ideal aid to better understanding the history and culture of the Puster Valley in South Tyrol.

Worth a mention amongst the castles in Alta Pusteria is Dobbiaco Castle / Herbstenburg: This residential castle is located in the vicinity of the baroque Parish Church in Dobbiaco. Part of the original construction is a medieval tower. The castle was then extended by the Herbst brothers (this is why it's called Herbstenburg Castle) in 1500. At the inside you find arch rooms, wooden ceilings, impressive balconies and wall frescos.
