This church has a long history and is nowadays regarded as being one of the oldest and most interesting alpine churches in the whole of Tyrol. Parish Church of Villa Ottone This was originally a roman church. It was later on gothicised and in the churches interior a precious altar of the so called "Maestro di Villa Ottone" was found. The real name of the artist is not known, but he was however, one of the main masters of the late Gothic period and it is also believed, that he could have been the teacher of the famous Michael Pacher. Chapel of Castel Neuhaus At the beginning of the 17th Century this was a preferred place for pilgrimage. In 1999, thanks to the Hofer Family, the Chapel was completely restored. Parish Church of San Martino in Badia This church has some statues by Dominikus Moling, a Baroque sculptor from Val Badia. St Lucy’s Church at Longiarù A document dating back to 1371 already confirms the existence of this church which was then destroyed by flooding around 1490. The present church was built in neo-Romanesque style between 1864 and 1867. St Anthony of Padua’s Chapel at Piccolino This chapel goes back to 1688 and features a triptych by Vinatzer. In addition, a variety of beautiful chapels can be found in the surroundings of the municipality. They are a testament to the strong faith and great devoutness of the local people. Pilgrimage Church Maria Saalen This church was built in 1652 and houses the noteworthy Black Mary with Jesus. Parish church of Pieve di Marebbe Val Badia was colonized coming from the North and Pieve di Marebbe was certainly one of the first areas to be inhabited. The centre of the village is very typical of the area with its few houses around the church which has a high gothic bell tower (56 m) towering and dominating the whole surrounding. The church of Pieve can be considered to be the principal church, since the whole religious life of the valley revolved around it. Todays church is a beautiful baroque building in the shape of a cross. The main altar, in renaissance style, is of particular beauty and is also interesting in terms of history. It was constructed after a wish, that was expressed in 1636, the year of the plague, came true. In its centre a miraculous statue of Mary (Saint Mary from d'La Pli) can be admired. The deanery head quarter used to be at Pieve di Marebbe from 1700 until 1914. The parish church of Pieve di Marebbe has always been, and indeed still is a very popular place of pilgrimage not only for the population of Marebbe and the Val Badia Valley, but also for all of the believers of the neighboring valley, the Puster Valley. Parish church of S. Vigilio di Marebbe The parish church of S. Vigilio is a true artistic jewel of late baroque style for the whole village and the whole community. The fresk-paintings on the inside are works of art by the famous painter Matthäus Günther, who was then the dean of the Academy of Augsburg. When entering the church after admiring the fresk-paintings of Günther, you will be able to observe the two elegant side choirs, the beautiful pulpit, and the extraordinary picture with the image of Holy Mary, a real masterpiece of stucco. the pictures of the 14 stations of the cross of Karl Henrici (1783) – painter from Bolzano – are also well worth being admired. |
