Other sightseeings in the Holiday Resort Plan de CoronesPater Haspinger House at S. Martino in Casies Vally
The “Pater Haspinger House” in St. Martin, formerly a shooting range which was set up as open air shooting range on the occasion of the Tyrolean anniversary year 1909. Inside the house you can now see a photogrammetric reproduction of the famous painting “Der Landsturm” by Albin Egger Lienz. Corn mills at Terento The granaries and the old corn mills along the Winnebach river and the Terner Tal valley are certainly worth a visit. Before roads were built in and to Terenten, a lot of corn was cultivated there, and the village was nearly self-sufficient. Along the streams there were pounders and mills, blacksmith’s workshops, water-powered sawmills, the wheelwright’s and the weaver’s workshops. A section along the Terner Bach stream has been turned into a mill study trail. It will remain a testament to the hard work of our ancestors for future generations too. In this area there is another unique and bizarre sight, formed by nature, the earth pyramids. They have formed from moraine sediments of the last Ice Age. The lower layers are interspersed with stones and rocks, whereas the upper parts consist almost entirely of fine material. The ice-age detritus mainly consists of weathered granite and is thus very light in color. The earth pyramids came into existence through the historical thunder storm in July 1837. Enormous masses of detritus broke off and were washed away. The rain and thaw constantly chiselled new pillars and columns, which continue to exist as long as they are topped by their protective covering stone. These days the flow of Terner Bach stream is regulated, which means that the base level is not lowered any more and the earth pyramids cannot “walk” downstream any longer. The Ladin cultural institute “Micurà de Rü” at S. Martino in Badia The Ladin cultural institute has contributed considerably to the preservation of Ladin culture and it has given a strong boost to Ladin self-consciousness. It also has a library which is open to the public from Monday to Friday (from 10 am – 12 noon and from 3 pm – 5 pm). Last but not least, the Ladin cultural institute organises various exhibitions by Ladin artists in the summer. Valley of the mills at Longiarù In the Valle dei Mulini (valley of the mills) in Longiarù you can see eight completely renovated mills spread over about 1.5 km along the Seres River. A very interesting and nicely laid out path leads the visitors from mill to mill. These mills, part of which are still used today, are a living testimony to old-established Ladin culture. The Valle dei Mulini represents a marvelous open-air museum. Hamlets at Longiarù The so-called Viles, old Ladin hamlets, are of great cultural and historical importance too. On the valley’s sunny slopes you can see numerous little hamlets (so-called “Viles”) which consist of typical Ladin farmhouses. Bagni di Valdander The origins of the “Bagni di Valdander” are shrouded in mystery. Legend has it that the well was discovered by a shepherd boy. When the water was boiled it became as white as milk and took on a bitter and salty taste. In the course of time the water of this well was used to cure a great variety of diseases. Many years of experience have shown that this water is very well suited for the treatment of certain diseases, above all skin and bone problems. Information: Tel. +39 0474 520005 Catarina Lanz The young girl of Marebbe, Catarina Lanz, born in S. Vigilio di Marebbe in 1797, was one of the main figures in the battles against Napoleon’s French troops. In 1797, at the age of 27, she volunteered to fight in Spines, a small village in the vicinity of Bessanone. She was armed solely with a pitchfork and she defended the church and the cemetery from profanation. The bronze statue in the centre of S. Vigilio is a reminder of the heroic girl from Marebbe and it is a work of art done by the ladin sculptor Otto Irsara from Badia. |
