It was later on gothicised and in the churches interior a precious altar of the so called "Maestro di Villa Ottone" was found. They are a testament to the strong faith and great devoutness of the local people.Pilgrimage Church Maria SaalenThis church was built in 1652 and houses the noteworthy Black Mary with Jesus.Parish church of Pieve di MarebbeVal Badia was colonized coming from the North and Pieve di Marebbe was certainly one of the first areas to be inhabited. The centre of the village is very typical of the area with its few houses around the church which has a high gothic bell tower (56 m) towering and dominating the whole surrounding. The church of Pieve can be considered to be the principal church, since the whole religious life of the valley revolved around it.Todays church is a beautiful baroque building in the shape of a cross. The main altar, in renaissance style, is of particular beauty and is also interesting in terms of history. It was constructed after a wish, that was expressed in 1636, the year of the plague, came true. In its centre a miraculous statue of Mary (Saint Mary from d'La Pli) can be admired. The deanery head quarter used to be at Pieve di Marebbe from 1700 until 1914. The parish church of Pieve di Marebbe has always been, and indeed still is a very popular place of pilgrimage not only for the population of Marebbe and the Val Badia Valley, but also for all of the believers of the neighboring valley, the Puster Valley. Parish church of S. Vigilio di MarebbeThe parish church of S. Vigilio is a true artistic jewel of late baroque style for the whole village and the whole community. The fresk-paintings on the inside are works of art by the famous painter Matthäus Günther, who was then the dean of the Academy of Augsburg. When entering the church after admiring the fresk-paintings of Günther, you will be able to observe the two elegant side choirs, the beautiful pulpit, and the extraordinary picture with the image of Holy Mary, a real masterpiece of stucco. the pictures of the 14 stations of the cross of Karl Henrici (1783) – painter from Bolzano – are also well worth being admired.top Castles and locks in the Holiday Resort Plan de CoronesChela Castle at GaisThe 30th of April 1944 was a black day for the Castle. It went on fire and the flames could be seen from far away and still no one knows what started the fire off. The castle has never been restored since and unfortunately it is now a ruin.Neuhaus Castle at GaisYou either reach Neuhaus Castle from the main road near Gais in a good quarter of an hour or on a quiet and pleasant forest path from Uttenheim in just under an hour. Prominently set on a rounded hilltop the castle harmoniously blends with its surrounding landscape and the rustling of majestic broad-leaved trees. In the castle yard, from which you can overlook the valley, the Burgschenke (castle inn) invites you to stop and sit down in the shade of wild chestnut-trees, and if you feel pain in the small of your back from ascending the hill, you should put one of the wild chestnuts into your pocket; this is supposed to be very salutary according to popular belief.Aristocratic banquets and living are long desired wishes for so many. Special occasions, small and large parties can now be celebrated in an original manner in the Neuhaus castle. Be it for weddings or baptisms, here you will find the castle chapel with the adjacent castle garden, wine tavern and excellent restaurant. The festooned table in the hall makes a perfect place for special occasions. Neuhaus Castle is especially in the summer the meeting point of famous international groups of artists. Art exhibitions, concerts and open-air games are scheduled. Remains of the Castellotto a Villa OttoneThe Castellotto is located on a big rock that inclines on both sides. At the top you see the start of the ring-wall and further down, the building and the chapel can be found.Castel Ehrenburg (Casteldarne)The former residence of the Earls of Künigl is located in Puster Valley at the left bank of the Rienza river and at the bottom of the Gezzo mountain. The castle is still property of the Earls of Künigl and it is one of the few castles, that are still fully furnished. Thanks to this meticulous preservation, the castle provides evidence of the life style of the former upper class. This interesting building has two faces: one is the old wing that has barely changed since, and towards the East, the barouque section dating back to 1700. The important court in the shape of an arch, its harmonic architecture and its particularity and beauty make up the centre of the newest part of the castle. On three sides tower arches rest on granite columns with capitells that are designed in the finest manner. Thanks to the help of the Messerschmid Foundation the castle was restored only a few years ago and appears now in its baroque vestments.Information: Tel. +39 0474 565221 Welsperg CastleWelsperg Castle is situated on a hill which drops sharply to the Gsieserbach river on three sides. It was built in the 12th century by the Lords of Welsperg who claimed to be descendants of the Guelphs. One thing is for certain - they were amongst the most influential noble families in the Tirol. As bailiffs of the Counts of Görz and Tirol their political and social ascent began with an intelligent marriage policy and clever commercial, mining and administrative activities. Around 1900 the Counts of Welsperg became extinct and the castle now belongs to the Counts of Thun-Hohenstein-Welsperg. In 1765 a large part of the castle was devastated by a fire. In the meantime, however, the castle has been accurately restored, and it has developed into an important cultural centre and become an interesting place to visit. The new museum reobtained part of the artistic collection of the old Civic Museum, including sculptures and paintings of Michael and Friedrich Pacher. Also, the collection of modern graphics of local modern artists is also of great value for the museum. The museum has dedicated one section to the 'graphic and literature' of many modern writers and artists.Information: Tel. +39 0474 553292 - e-mail - homepage Ladin Museum Ciastel de Tor at San Martino in BadiaIn 1996 the autonomous Province of Bolzano bought the Tor Castel with the intention of opening a provincial museum. Martino in Casies VallyThe “Pater Haspinger House” in St. Martin, formerly a shooting range which was set up as open air shooting range on the occasion of the Tyrolean anniversary year 1909. Inside the house you can now see a photogrammetric reproduction of the famous painting “Der Landsturm” by Albin Egger Lienz.Corn mills at TerentoThe granaries and the old corn mills along the Winnebach river and the Terner Tal valley are certainly worth a visit. Before roads were built in and to Terenten, a lot of corn was cultivated there, and the village was nearly self-sufficient. Along the streams there were pounders and mills, blacksmith’s workshops, water-powered sawmills, the wheelwright’s and the weaver’s workshops. A section along the Terner Bach stream has been turned into a mill study trail. It will remain a testament to the hard work of our ancestors for future generations too. In this area there is another unique and bizarre sight, formed by nature, the earth pyramids. They have formed from moraine sediments of the last Ice Age. The lower layers are interspersed with stones and rocks, whereas the upper parts consist almost entirely of fine material. The ice-age detritus mainly consists of weathered granite and is thus very light in color. The earth pyramids came into existence through the historical thunder storm in July 1837. Enormous masses of detritus broke off and were washed away. The rain and thaw constantly chiselled new pillars and columns, which continue to exist as long as they are topped by their protective covering stone. These days the flow of Terner Bach stream is regulated, which means that the base level is not lowered any more and the earth pyramids cannot “walk” downstream any longer. The Ladin cultural institute “Micurà de Rü” at S. Martino in BadiaThe Ladin cultural institute has contributed considerably to the preservation of Ladin culture and it has given a strong boost to Ladin self-consciousness. It also has a library which is open to the public from Monday to Friday (from 10 am – 12 noon and from 3 pm – 5 pm). Last but not least, the Ladin cultural institute organises various exhibitions by Ladin artists in the summer.Valley of the mills at LongiarùIn the Valle dei Mulini (valley of the mills) in Longiarù you can see eight completely renovated mills spread over about 1.5 km along the Seres River. A very interesting and nicely laid out path leads the visitors from mill to mill. These mills, part of which are still used today, are a living testimony to old-established Ladin culture. The Valle dei Mulini represents a marvelous open-air museum.Hamlets at LongiarùThe so-called Viles, old Ladin hamlets, are of great cultural and historical importance too. On the valley’s sunny slopes you can see numerous little hamlets (so-called “Viles”) which consist of typical Ladin farmhouses.Bagni di ValdanderThe origins of the “Bagni di Valdander” are shrouded in mystery. Legend has it that the well was discovered by a shepherd boy. When the water was boiled it became as white as milk and took on a bitter and salty taste. In the course of time the water of this well was used to cure a great variety of diseases. Many years of experience have shown that this water is very well suited for the treatment of certain diseases, above all skin and bone problems.Information: Tel. +39 0474 520005 Catarina LanzThe young girl of Marebbe, Catarina Lanz, born in S. Vigilio di Marebbe in 1797, was one of the main figures in the battles against Napoleon’s French troops. In 1797, at the age of 27, she volunteered to fight in Spines, a small village in the vicinity of Bessanone. She was armed solely with a pitchfork and she defended the church and the cemetery from profanation. The bronze statue in the centre of S. Vigilio is a reminder of the heroic girl from Marebbe and it is a work of art done by the ladin sculptor Otto Irsara from Badia.top |
